The CSEA program recognizes general and specialty contractors who participated in the 12th annual AGC of America Construction Safety Excellence Awards Program. To qualify, companies had to achieve zero worksite fatalities, zero multi-catastrophic injuries and prepare a written nomination package in which they presented their safety training program, active employee involvement, evidence of management commitment and safety innovations.

Six AGC/C members submitted CSEA applications. They were Centerre Construction Co., Calcon Construction Co., GH Phipps Construction, LPR Construction Inc., PCL Construction Services Inc. and Sturgeon Electric. Of those entries, four companies qualified as finalists.

Then, at the AGC national convention in March, the finalists were required to make a five-minute presentation by upper management on their safety programs to an independent panel of judges consisting of representatives from construction and insurance, OSHA, the Corps of Engineers and colleges.

The Colorado chapter had four winners that were announced during the convention at the 12th Annual AGC/Willis Construction Safety Excellence Awards.

First-place building division winners included, in the 100,001-250,000 man-hour category, Calcon Constructors; in the specialty division, 700,001 - 1 million man-hour category, LPR Construction Co.; in the over 1 million man-hour category, Sturgeon Electric; and in the federal and heavy division, over 1 million man-hour category, PCL Construction Services.
PCL was also chosen as the 2012 AGC Construction Safety Excellence Grand Award winner.

This marks the 12th year of the CSEA awards program, and Calcon Constructors is the first and only firm in the country to be a three-time winner.

Pinnacol Awards

On the local and regional level, several member firms won safety awards through the AGC/C and Pinnacol Assurance Worker’s Compensation Insurance Group Dividend Plan. The plan provides a viable alternative for firms to the rising costs of providing workers’ compensation insurance for employees. Participating partner insurance agents in the program include BBVA Compass Insurance Agency Inc., Willis of Colorado, IMA of Colorado Inc., Van Gilder Insurance Corp., Network Insurance and Olson and Olson Insurance Services.

As part of this dividend program, participating chapter members must meet or exceed a number of requirements. This year’s winners are Starker Construction and Central Mechanical Inc.

NASA Awards

Eleven general contractors and seven specialty contractor members won National AGC Safety Awards (NASA), a program that offers AGC members with field exposure an opportunity to compare their safety records with companies that perform similar construction activities, are nearly the same size and work equivalent numbers of hours.

The following AGC/C general contractors achieved zero lost-workday incidence rates for 2011: Calcon Constructors, Centerre Construction, Drahota Commercial, GH Phipps, Golden Triangle Construction, Haselden Construction, Hyder Construction, JC Brooks & Co. and Starker Construction.

AGC/C specialty contractor members achieving zero lost-workday incidence rates for 2011 are: Central Mechanical, Greiner Electric, Ludvik Electric, Metropolitan Glass and Trautman and Shreve Inc.
AGC/C general contractor members that achieved 25% below division lost-workday incidence rate for 2011 are: Hensel Phelps Construction Co., Howell Construction and Saunders Construction.

RK Mechanical was the only AGC/C specialty contractor member recognized for achieving 25% below division lost-workday incidence rates for 2011.
