AIA Colorado
Recognizes 2009 Achievements in Architecture

The Colorado Chapter of the American Institute of Architects recognized its 2009 architectural design, honor and presidentís awards recipients during a ceremony on Oct. 17 at the Keystone Resort and Conference Center.

The 14 architectural design awards were selected from 120 entries submitted by AIA Colorado architects. AIA Colorado 2009 Design Awards Jury Chair Deborah Berke of Deborah Berke & Partners Architects in New York presented the awards. The winners are: see slide show on the left.

Honor Awards
In addition to the design awards, six honor awards were presented by AIA Colorado Honor Awards Jury Chair Katheryn Zeeb.

Architect of the Year: Brian R. Klipp of Denverís klipp. This award recognizes a licensed architect who has contributed to the profession and set an example in design, service and leadership to AIA Colorado over a period of at least 10 years.

Firm of the Year: Studio B Architects of Aspen. This award recognizes a firm that has contributed to the profession and has set an example in design, service and leadership to AIA Colorado over a period of at least 10 years.

25-Year Award: Republic Plaza in Denver. This award recognizes the enduring quality of architectural design and that has withstood the ďtest of timeĒ and still functions in its original capacity. Contribution to the Built Environment by a Non-Architect: Prof. Tom Noel, University of Colorado Denver. This award recognizes an outstanding contribution to the built environment and achievements by a non-architect who has, by his professionalism, dedication, leadership, ability and commitment, improved the quality of Colorado through the built environment.

Innovative Practices Award: Studio H:T of Boulder. This award recognizes an AIA Colorado firm that has demonstrated outstanding innovation in the practice of architecture.

Leadership Award: Mike Wisneski of Genslerís Denver office. This award recognizes a member of AIA Colorado whose leadership through AIA or any public organization or forum within Colorado has resulted in better public awareness of the profession or more livable and sustainable buildings or communities.

President's Awards
AIA Colorado 2009 President Stuart Coppedge of RTA Architects presented two presidentís awards. These awards are presented to individuals or companies that have made extraordinary contributions in supporting the mission of AIA Colorado and are selected at the discretion of the component president. This yearís recipients were Cheri Gerou of Gerou & Associates and Chris Stumm of ctds architects.

The American Institute of Architects Denver chapter recognized its 2009 architectural design, honor and presidentís award recipients during a ceremony on Sept. 11 at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Design Awards
The nine architectural design awards were selected from 66 entries submitted by members of AIA Denver and judged by a jury of architects and design experts from New York. They were presented by AIA Denver Design Awards Jury Chair Bruce Fowle of FXFOWLE Architects of New York.

In addition to the design awards, three honor awards were presented by AIA Denver Honor Awards Jury member Gerardo Salinas, senior associate at Anderson Mason Dale Architects in Denver. Lifetime Achievement Award: Peter Dominick Jr., posthumously, formerly of 4240 Architecture, Denver. 25-year Award: Auraria Library, Denver, by Helmut Jahn. James Sudler, AIA, Award For Contribution to AIA Denver: Denver Architectural Foundation.

Presidentís Awards
Five Presidentís Awards were presented by AIA Denver 2009 President Steve Carr. The awards are presented to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in supporting the mission of AIA Denver or local architecture and are selected at the discretion of the chapter president.

Paul Brady, for his diligent coordination of a review of the residential aspects of the new draft Denver zoning code on behalf of the chapter.

David Daniel, for his ongoing efforts to promote quality urban design in the chapter and the region.

Fred Andreas, Ernest Joyner and the AIA Denver Public Affairs Committee, for their ongoing and diligent efforts to create a key outreach tool for the chapter through a presentation of the International Energy Conservation Code 2009.

Councilman Charlie Brown, for continued support of AIA Denver and the profession of architecture.

Sean OíHara, for his ongoing contributions to the chapter as chair of the AIA Denver Design Awards committee for the past four years. Under his leadership, the committee has grown the awards program and the scope of the design awards gala.

AIA Utah
Recognizes 2009 Achievements in Architecture (see slide show above)

The American Institute of Architects Utah chapter recognized its 2009 architectural honor and merit award recipients during a ceremony on Nov. 13. The design awards program was chaired by Dr. Julio Bermudez, associate professor, College of Architecture & Planning, University of Utah—who recruited this year’s jury.

The jury for the 2009 awards was comprised of Anne Marie Decker, chair, Duvall Decker Architects, Jackson, Miss.; Victor F. Trahan, Trahan Architects, Baton Rouge, La.; John Friedman, John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects, Los Angeles.
